Adjectives: The Heart of German Description

In previous episodes of the Better German Podcast, I have taught you the basics: nouns to name things (like in Episode 12 [Wordlist classroom] and Episode 25 [Guide to Learn German nouns]) and simple sentences to start putting them together (Episode 7 [Your First Sentences in German] and Episode 20 [Easy Sentences in German]). Those steps gave you the foundation to speak your first German.
Now, it’s time to add another layer: describing what those things are like. Not just a house, but a big house. Not just a table, but a beautiful table. That’s where adjectives come in, or as we call them in German, Adjektiv. These little words don’t just tell you what something is, they let you describe how it is: big or small, expensive or cheap, beautiful or plain. With adjectives, your German becomes more expressive, more natural, and more fun to use.
Why Adjectives?🤔❓
Let’s take cars, for example. Sure, you can say, “I have a Range Rover.” But is it new or old? Big or small? Beautiful or maybe ugly? Adjectives paint the full picture—and now, you’ll be able to do that in German too. 🤓
The 16 Must-Know German Adjectives🔍
You probably already know these 16 super handy common adjectives, but here’s a sneak peek of some of them and their German versions:
- groß – big
- klein – small
- teuer – expensive & billig – cheap (yes, this pair comes in handy when shopping!💸)
