Say Hello and Sound Like a Local!

🤝Greetings are your doorway into every German conversation. They set the tone, open the connection, and help you feel instantly more confident.

In Episode 10, you’ll move beyond the basics and discover how Germans actually greet each other — from polite introductions to casual, everyday hellos.

If you missed it, go back to Episode 9, where we kicked things off with self-introductions and first impressions. Together, these two episodes give you everything you need to start any German conversation on the right foot.

A Quick Taste of German Greetings🌟

German greetings are more than just words — they’re tiny social cues that tell someone who you are, how you feel, and even where you’re from. For example:

“Mein Name ist…“ (“My name is…“)

“Ich heiße…” Literally (“I am called…”) – a bit less formal and more conversational.

💡Tip: The “heiße” version is casual and widely used in spoken German, especially in Austria. For formal situations, “Wie heißen Sie?” – (“What is your name?”) is polite, while “Wie heißt du?” – (“What is your name?”) is perfect for informal chats.

And don’t miss cultural gems like “Mahlzeit!“ — a cheerful midday greeting used in Austria and parts of Germany.

This episode is packed with more greeting phrases and cultural tips to help you sound natural in German. Tune in to Episode 10, download the accompanying PDF guide in the Better German Community, and listen and practice along with me.

🗣️ Quick tip before you go: Next time you text a friend or join a German meet-up, try both “Mein Name ist…“ and “Ich heiße…“ to see which feels more natural. 🌟 “Bis bald!“ — (See you soon!)😉
