An Easy Guide to German Articles – Start Here!

Ever come across the words: der, die, and das, and not know when and how to use them? What are they, and what do they do? Don’t worry— in this episode of the Better German Podcast, Susi Blumel explains German articles in a simple and friendly way.
Here’s a taste of what you’ll learn — plus one tip you can apply today.
Why Do German Articles Matter?
In German, you cannot skip little words like der, die, or das. These are called “articles,” and they are very important. They come before nouns (naming words like table, wall, love) and help you speak correctly. In English, we use “a” or “the.” In German, articles tell us if a noun is masculine (der), feminine (die), or neutral (das). The episode goes a bit more into it, but the truth is, there is no need to worry about them. It always takes a bit longer to learn the articles than the actual words, but if you keep practicing the words correctly, they will stick!
Make German Articles Stick – Learn them with Nouns
Here’s Susi’s best advice: Articles are your friends, and start learning nouns from the very beginning. Using articles in German will help your sentences sound clear and correct. When you learn a new German word, always include its article! For example, don’t just learn “Tisch” (table). Learn “der Tisch.” Make it a habit every single time. This will help you make good German sentences in the future. This emphasizes her approach of combining this much theory with THAT much practice!
Practice Makes Fluent: Get A Conversation Buddy! 🤝
Practice German in conversation. Get a study partner to practice with, preferably at your learning level. Get your wordlist with articles and nouns. Say them together—like “das Fenster” (the window) or “die Wand” (the wall). Get your partner to listen to what you are saying and encourage you to say more, and vice versa. The key is to focus on listening and understanding, not just repeating, and the goal is to feel comfortable conversing in German, so you get to a point of real communication in German!
