Better German Podcast – Episode 42: Color Sentences

🎨 Bring more color into your spoken German!

Now that you know the German words for colors — rot, blau, and so on (see Better German Podcast, Episode 40) — let’s go one step further. In this episode, I show you how to move from simply naming colors to using them naturally in sentences, both in questions and answers.

💡 There’s a free PDF with all the examples in the Better German Community (free to join at bettergerman.info/community).

Start simple, then build

Begin by describing what you see:

“Der Tisch ist grün.” (The table is green.)

Then turn it into a question:

“Ist der Tisch grün?” (Is the table green?)

And answer:

“Ja, der Tisch ist grün.” (Yes, the table is green.)

“Nein, der Tisch ist gelb.” (No, the table is yellow.)

This episode gives you plenty of examples to practice — and shows you a common German way of asking about colors that’s a little different from English.

A tip for practicing

If speaking in sentences feels slow at first, that’s fine — it means you’re learning. Use the PDF guide while you listen, repeat the sentences until they flow, and you’ll soon be describing your surroundings in German without even thinking about it.
