You’re Likely Learning German the Hard Way.
Still struggling with German — even after apps, grammar guides, or expensive courses? There’s a reason it’s not working. And no, it’s not because you’re bad at languages, or that German is complicated
In Episode 4 of the Better German podcast, experienced teacher Susi Blümel reveals a powerful truth: learning German naturally — the way humans are built to learn.
Let’s dive into some highlights from this practical and motivational episode.
Not Just Endless German Grammar, Real Communication!
Most people try to learn German by memorizing word lists or drilling grammar rules. But that rarely works. Why? Because the words never get used. If you don’t say them out loud, build sentences, or use them in real situations, they just don’t stick — and speaking stays hard.
Susi teaches a better way: First, clear up what the words mean. Then, pronounce them out loud a few times. But here’s the key — you’ve got to use them. In games. In small conversations. That’s where it clicks.
She also introduces “sentence patterns” — simple, fill-in-the-blank phrases that help you speak right away.
For example:
“Das ist ein –.” (“This is a –.”)
Just fill in the blank, and you’ve got dozens of real-world sentences ready to go. It’s like Mad Libs — but actually useful in conversation!
Together, these tips make German feel more natural — and a lot more fun to speak!
Practice That Makes German Feel Natural
If you want to swim, you don’t just sit by the pool and read the manual. You get in the water. Same with German. You can’t get fluent from flashcards alone. You have to speak, even if it’s messy. Even if it’s wrong.
Susi keeps things simple: first, clear the meaning, then repeat it in ways that stick. Before you know it, speaking German just feels normal.
A Little Deutsch Encouragement!
Prioritize using German in real situations—conversation, games, or writing short messages. That’s where it comes alive!
